GFL – Page 0079
Grouping For Looks is a page-by-page retelling of the Looking For Group saga through the lens of a mirror universe where Cale is a goateed tyrant and Richard is a holy soul trying to set him on a good path.
INT. THE CITY BENEATH THE CITY – THE PAST
The annoyed dragon man disappears into the darkness, leaving Pella ashamed and mumbling a long but indecipherable pep talk to herself.
Richard raises his hand and conjures a ball of fire into his open palm.
RICHARD
No!
Cale perks up, nudging Benny.
CALE
This just got interesting.
RICHARD
Because of the fire? You may see it as a fiery ball of energy able to fry my enemies with a satisfying “fwoosh”-
Cale nods enthusiastically.
RICHARD
But it doesn’t have to be!
Cale’s grin sinks into a childish pout.
RICHARD
I lit this fire to see into the darkness-
Richard gestures at the room the dragon left into, revealing more than half a dozen (but less than 10) similar dragon people.
RICHARD
Because every fire can also be a beacon. You!
Richard points at the dragons, who exchange glances and shuffle their feet awkwardly.
RICHARD
You say you tried to shape the land around you, that you learned it was a mistake. Well I say you learned the wrong lesson. You got burned and gave up on fire. I say you used the right tool in the wrong way.
The main dragon person fires back at Richard with an accusatory pointing of his own.
DRAGON PERSON
How do you know? How do you know that ignoring fire’s destructive power won’t leave everything you’re fighting for razed to ruin?
RICHARD
Because I have to.
Cale nudges Benny again. She’s getting annoyed.
CALE (whispering)
I would have said “Because I must.” More gravitas.
RICHARD
I have to believe in something. I have to believe the world can be better. Better than this.
Richard points at Cale, Benny, and Krunch.
BENNY
I don’t think it can.
CALE
If anything, it’s worse.
Cut To:
EXT. KETHENECIA – THE PAST – DAY
An exhausted General Breem kneels on blood soaked ground. The severed heads of his legion lie around him. Their headless corpses lie in a pile to one side, their perturbed horses stand in a row to the other.
Breem breathes heavily, pondering his red stained axe.
HORSES
Neigh!
Breem glowers at the animals. They’re all looking uphill, and trying to run downhill.
Breem looks uphill.
Hundreds of soldiers, flanked by siege towers and under the shadows of griffon air cavalry, march towards him.
BREEM
Guess you’re next…
Breem adjusts his helmet.
